The Kashmir Food Safety Department refuted on Thursday the unfounded allegations regarding the use of chemicals to prematurely ripen watermelons and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to upholding strict food safety regulations.
Shugufta Jalal, deputy commissioner of the food safety department, stated that the concerns of early ripening are unfounded because the specialists, who specialise in food technology, have carried out extensive testing throughout the region. According to her, the tests involve both observation and in-depth analysis using cutting-edge machinery, and the outcomes have verified that the watermelons are safe to eat.

Contrary to assertions that watermelons are not a seasonal fruit, she added that watermelons are cultivated all year round in many places of India because of the country’s different climatic circumstances.
According to Shagufta, the department has been proactive in conducting on-the-spot testing, with teams deployed and mobile testing vans positioned in strategic locations around Kashmir.
She berated the oncologist for making public remarks without first consulting the authorities since she believed that this would create undue grief to the populace.
